The State Coordination Office for Prostitution and Sex Work NRW (LaKo) is a model project funded by the Ministry for Children, Youth, Family, Equality, Refugees and Integration (MKJFGFI) and a further component in the existing support system of specialized counseling centers in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Its overarching goal is to improve the living and working conditions of people in prostitution and sex work. To achieve this goal, the LaKo will address various areas of responsibility:
The LaKo integrates into this support system by acting as a networking agency. This aims to expand the interaction and networking of counseling and support centers in NRW. By providing organizational support for specialist meetings and state working groups, it encourages exchange and creates space for collaboration. Through this networking and the exchange of information on the current situation and developments, the State Coordination Office for Prostitution and Sex Work NRW can generate an overview of the scene in NRW and conduct recurring statewide assessments and needs assessments.
Based on their findings, the concerns and needs of people in prostitution and sex work are then identified and documented in collaboration with specialist counseling centers. These are compiled and submitted to the Ministry for Children, Youth, Family, Equality, Refugees, and Integration in the form of regular reports and discussions for discussion.
Another area of responsibility of the State Coordination Office for Prostitution and Sex Work NRW is educational work. Within this framework, workshops and training courses are offered on various relevant topics (such as tax and labor law, STIs, the Prostitute Protection Act, etc.). This service is aimed at professionals such as staff at counseling centers or from the relevant departments of the regulatory and health authorities, as well as sex workers.
The Ministry for Equality's information portal for people in prostitution and sex work in North Rhine-Westphalia, www.cara.nrw, has been online since September 2021. If you have questions or need advice beyond the information available online, you can receive advice by phone or in writing via email. The NRW State Coordination Office for Prostitution and Sex Work was commissioned by the Ministry to provide this counseling service.
